THERE IS A LAND IN THE HEART OF EUROPE

INTRODUCTION

On a heavily rainy day, July 13, 2004, I arrived at the Slovenian Embassy in Helsinki. From there I sent a letter to the Slovenian government asking for support to establish some kind of Slavic cultural union. This would be a union between the Slavic states and all people near the Slavic culture and languages around the world, and also a cultural bridge between the Slavic and all other European and world cultures.

In my opinion, this kind of union should be supported by the Slavic governments from the start, and I chose the Slovenians. From my time in Yugoslavia I knew them to be pragmatic and responsible people. Slovenia happens to be the most western of the Slavic states, today it has a high level of democracy and it was the first Slavic state to become a member of the EU. I believed that if the Slovenians supported my idea, then all the other Slavic states would follow, and my Initiative would be understood in the right way, serving the democratic value of today.

While waiting for the answer, I founded an association named the SLAVIC UNION here in Finland, with the idea that it would grow to become globally what I had visioned. I also wrote my "First Slavic Proclamation" or "The First Epistle to the Slavs and Others", shortly and simply to advertise and to explain what I meant with this cultural initiative. During that time I got my first supporters.

In the future I plan to publish a book, some kind of brochure, but before that is going to happen I have decided to put all my ideas on the Internet in the form of a website. In my opinion, the site should be like an open book which is read page by page. I have used a simple technique, but I hope the site will be more complete in the future. Now at least many people can go on the Internet and read the site for themselves. Just like every website, my site - "the open book" - is alive and interactive. So, "You...oh, good reader", you will find on the site my contact info, and if you feel like it, just call or write to me and give your opinions, critiques, etc.

Although the Initiative is cultural, we will need support of the governments of the Slavic states and the international community, otherwise it will remain only an idea.

The future will tell if I was right or not.

THERE IS A LAND IN THE HEART OF EUROPE

There are three main language groups in Europe: Ugro-Finnic, Romano-Germanic and Slavic.

Slavic languages are spoken in twelve European countries: Belarus, (White Russia), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Macedonia, Poland, Russia, Serbia-Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.

Two unique Slavic languages are still spoken by the SORBS of LUSATIA in Germany, and by the CROATS of GRADI?TE (BURGENLAND CROATS) in Austria.

These communities, whose languages are spoken nowhere else, represent very special minority cultures, and have preserved their Slavic culture and indentity in their host countries.

Aside from the official languages, there are many regional dialects spoken throughout Europe which are less well-known and less studied.

Slavic languages extend over an area totalling 18 694 600 km?, and are spoken by some 294 216 600 people, not including Slavonic people living outside of Slavonic countries, for example Slavic people in the states of the former Soviet Union, Baltic states, Kazakhstan, etc.

The SLAVIC CULTURAL INITIATIVE has been created as a cultural bridge, to promote awareness of Slavic languages, culture, history and traditions. It is a way for Slavic people of all origins to come to know ourselves and each other better.

Those who speak one Slavic language as a mother tongue should understand and speak all the Slavic languages. These languages are our wealth.

Anyone can play a part in the Slavic Initiative, whether you live in a Slavic country or abroad. We welcome your ideas, texts, initiatives, suggestions, critiques.

Write us in any Slavic language, or any other major language, especially English, which as today 's world language will be the most important means for communicating in our Slavic Union.

This call we extend especially to descendants of the Slavic people living around the world, almost as numerous today as those still living in the original Slavic countries.

We hope to organize cultural activities of all kinds, including sporting events featuring Slavic national teams.

No one can deny that we play great football, hockey, basketball, handball, and other sports. Ultimately, this could lead to organizing our own SLAVIC OLYMPICS, a SLAVENIADA.

We propose a world-wide MISS SLAVIA competition. No one can deny Slavic women are among the most beautiful. We will organize a SONG OF SLAVIA song competition, like we have today with the Eurovision song contest, and many other interesting events are possible.

We will also propose educational programs and in primary schools for teaching Slavic languages and culture.

We will provide teaching materials and organize fun learning activities such as games and quizzes about Slavic literature, geography, history and society. No one can deny that our literature is great.

Slavia - this beautiful old slavic word will become our common name and bring us together. ..................There are great possibilities. Let' s make them happen!

Slavia - the Land of Love, Peace and Freedom!
